By equipped with a 6.1-inch OLED HDR10 screen, 6GB of main memory and A14 Bionic bionic chip, iPhone 12 Pro ranks second in Apple‘s 2020 high-end smartphone series.
Unlike the lower-end iPhone 12 and iPhone 12 MIni models, the camera has standard, ultra-wide-angle, and telephoto modules. In contrast, the first two are not equipped with telephoto lenses. The iPhone 12 Pro Max, which is higher-end than the 12 Pro, is also equipped with three-camera, but its standard wide-angle built-in larger sensor, and its telephoto lens has a longer focal length.

Apple iPhone 12 Pro scored 128 points under DXOMARK Camera, which is four points higher than last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max. It ranks among the top five in our rankings and replaced it as the best Apple phone in this database. Apple iPhone 12 Pro scored a high score (135 points) in photos, and an excellent score (112 points) in video, which laid the foundation for the overall score. The phone scored 66 points in the zoom test, which is slightly lower than the best phone in this category. The main reason is that the phone’s telephoto lens only provides 2x optical magnification.
In the photo mode, we found that the phone’s autofocus system is a highlight, which can focus quickly and accurately in most cases. The preview image of the phone also received excellent scores, closer to the final photo than many other high-end phones. Its exposure is generally good, but our testers found that the dynamic range is a bit small, highlighting and shadow clipping will occur under difficult conditions. The color rendering is accurate under indoor lighting, but the color shift may be obvious in outdoor images; except in very dim environments, the camera can retain very good details, but when shooting indoors and low light, You will often find image noise.
The telephoto lens of the iPhone 12 Pro can produce good picture quality at a close zoom distance, but if the lens is further zoomed back, the details will be slightly worse, but the effect is still better than that of the iPhone 11 Pro Max. At the other end of the zoom, the phone’s ultra-wide-angle camera can take good image effects, but the details and corner sharpness are insufficient, and there is still room for improvement.
The iPhone 12 Pro is not the top model in Apple’s smartphone lineup in 2020, but it is still at the top of our rankings and is currently the best iPhone in our database. The overall performance of its photos is quite solid, and in many aspects are slightly better than last year’s iPhone 11 Pro Max flagship. The video mode is a highlight of this new model, because its video uses HLG Dolby Vision technology, and its dynamic range is wider than that of many competitors’ phones. However, if you are very particular about the quality of long-range zoom, then the iPhone 12 Pro may not be your first choice. However, if we consider other mobile imaging applications, we are willing to recommend this phone.
