Korean media ETNews cited industry sources as saying that according to Apple's new order, it is known that the company will equip all 2021 iPhone models with a "touch-in-one" OLED display. As a comparison, the current touch screen requires the touch sensor film to be pasted on the panel to achieve the same function. By placing touch sensors inside the panel, the new technology is expected to further panel thickness and reduce overall cost.
Since 2007, Apple has been using the traditional thin-film touch screen sensor solution. However, at the iPhone 12 new product launch event this fall, the company is expected to change this policy.
It is said that as early as 2017, Samsung has used the all-in-one OLED touch screen panel called Y-OCTA on the Galaxy Note 7.
However, on 5.4 / 6.1 / 6.7-inch Apple iPhone 12 models, Apple may also choose LG Display as a parallel supplier.
After sufficient market verification, the cost-effectiveness of the integrated OLED touch screen panel has also been quite outstanding. After a small test on the iPhone 12 this fall, Apple may fully switch to this technology in 2021.
At present, both Samsung Display and LG Display are supplying OLED panels to the iPhone, but as a major global buyer of electronic components, Apple's moves have been highly concerned by industry observers.
Recently, it was reported that LG Display has begun to increase its efforts on the Paju E6 small and medium OLED production line, with a view to supplying Apple next year.
However, given that Samsung Display has accumulated rich experience in mass production of integrated OLED touch panels, the company is likely to win more iPhone OLED panel orders in 2021.
